I wanted to highlight a few of the books I've been reading, that you may also want to read to further expand your learning and understanding of past and current events in Africa.
Emma's War
By Deborah Scroggins
A journalist who has spent a great deal of time in Sudan explains the situatoin in the last 20 or so years and couples that with the story of a British Aid worker who maarried a southern Sudanese war lord. Interesting and somewhat scandalous reading.
An Ordinary Man: An Autobiography
by Paul Rusesabagina
This is the true story about the hotel manager in the movie Hotel Rwanda. This is a good book to give you a great deal of perspective and background of the culture of Rwanda and the real events that transpired in the hotel, only a few were added by Hollywood. A very easy read.
The Fate of Africa: A History of 50 years of Independance
by Martin Meredith
Wrtiten by a journalist this is some pretty heavy weight reading on the history of Africa but good for understanding things if you plan on dabbling in Africa affairs and commenting on things intelligently. (I confessed I have not finished this one yet)
