A Faff time in Zanzibar
Hello! Sorry if this blog has been a bit dull over the last two months but its me reporting back in after two months in Darfur. Well technically I'm reporting in from Zanzibar (off the coast of Tanzania for those geography challenged Americans) after a week of sleeping, scuba diving, and general relaxing/chatting with a friend who also is working in the same area. Since the friend I'm vacationing with is British and I essentially work with either Africans or British people now I've been trying to expand my British vocabulary specifically north English phrases and a bit of cockney rhyming. This includes such delightful words as faff and minger. Faffing is what you do when you are doing nothing delaying getting around to leaving or doing something. I am now on a quest to find the word for faffing in local languages and introduce it into American English. My current favorite cockney rhyming phrase is "I haven't got a sooby?" which is short for "I haven't got a Scooby Doo?" which rhymes with "clue" so instead of saying "I haven't got a clue?" you get the idea I think.
For all of you worried about my ability to find a place to get a pedicure in such a remote area, have no fear a large expensive Italian resort nearby was able to provide me with one in addition to an aromatherapy massage, bless them.
In summary the past two months have been great! You probably thinking come on now you were in Darfur - great cannot be the word to describe it! But God has been so good, I had chance to learn lots, feel like I contributed/eased the work load a bit, stayed healthy, had a great time with the staff living and working there. But also had a chance to experience some of the not so fun aspects of such a location and the emotions and stress that go along with that. I was sad that I'm moving onto another field location and will miss my new friends.
